Minimizing the cost of any project is a real tough nut to crack. Understanding your hassle, we have done the job for you. Just follow our guideline and you will finish building your outdoor storage bench.
We will start with one plywood to minimize our cost and cut it in such dimensions that it will be able to hold all of your cushions. Follow the bellow diagram and cut your plywood into parts. In doing so, you will have a minimal amount of waste.
Do not try to improvise and change the dimension or you will end up buying another plywood.
Now it’s time to use your saw (we have used a table saw in this picture). If you have never done this before, we would recommend you to ask someone else who is used to saw cutting and have skill. Wearing eye protection is necessary or the sawdust might hurt your eyes. You can see how the eye protection glasses look. They look cool, right? You will get safety buds with the eye protector for free, so do not forget to use both while using a saw.
If you have succeeded to follow our instructions and implement them properly, this is how your panels will look like.
Second Step (Assembling Parts)
As we will be placing our storage box in an open place outside, so it has to be built in such a way that it can resist harsh weather. Liquid nails are a good choice but we do not want to take any chance and therefore we have picked a sealant. The sealant is a proved thing which we have used in our boats beforehand. Now think, when it can stick a boat’s parts, how effective will it be to stick your storage box? Keep the base part of plywood on an upper surface like lay the edge as we have done in the below picture. Use the sealant adhesive as showing in the picture.
Now, put the back panel vertically along the edge on the sealant adhesive. Instruct your friend or anyone who is present there to hold it steady while you nail it down after every few inches.
Keep nailing accordingly around the box and use sealant adhesive properly to its every edge where the box panels connect with one another.
To protect your ear, use earbuds. On side and base edges, apply adhesive sealant and nail properly the final front panel of your box.
Then caulk with sealant the inside and outside part of the seams. However, you can also use paintable caulk here.
Follow the picture for a vivid image of what you are about to do.
Congratulation for building you first outdoor storage bench. But slow down, we are not finished with it still. Time to add detail to your boring storage bench.
First, let’s cut down your trim boards in proper shape and then let’s glue and nail them on the surface and down parts. Now, let’s measure the side parts of the storage box and cut the trims again accordingly.
For measuring the trims accurately, place them in a straight line on the board and mark the cutting edges. This method of cutting trims is used by the professionals and so you can be sure of getting an accurate cut.
You can see in the picture that we have used PVC quarter on the edge of the lid. PVC is very lightweight, easy to cut in shape and yet it provides you strength and smoothness. Like our previous manner, glue and nail with the lid part of your storage box.
Prepare two trim boards following 1×2” measurement and put them underside the lid to give it strength and longevity.
Use quality wood filler to fill the nail holes. To add more smoothness, use sandpaper. For adding a nice appearance to your box, paint it with a fun color.
Check the picture, how we have placed the box on a cloth and then use two coats of best quality primer, do not leave the underside. Finish with exterior latex paint on the box with two coats.
For moving storage box comfortably from one place to another, screw in the four casters on the ground rims of your box.
So, here is your Final look of Outdoor Storage Bench that you have made by yourself
If everything has worked accordingly so far, we expect you to build a nice looking outdoor storage box.
To tell you the truth, building an outdoor storage bench requires a set of skills and proper guidance.
On our part, we have provided you with all the guidelines. We believe that if you have minimum skills in this field, you will be able to build a storage bench for your home without any hassle.
